About me

I am a granddaughter of tailors.

I have been sewing for as long as I can remember. Blessed with a mother who has a love of fabric and design and an uncanny color sense and an engineer father. I love proportion and combination. Every summer I try something new. This summer my friend Robin introduced me to Jill, who said all I really need is courage and to reach into the boxes I have been saving for years. Collections of buttons, trims, fabrics clothes and kitchen linens repurposed.

Thanks to my husband for system support and tolerating my boxes of fabric for 20 years.

I grew up on a wonderful block where all the mothers were talented in one way or another. Sonni, Adam’s mom was the best seamstress and made a persuasive argument for things being as perfect on the inside as on the outside and lived up to this maxim with her own exquisite needlepoint and embroidery. It took me about forty five years to realize that there are alternatives to this view. The Japanese have a term "wabi sabi" which is the appreciation of beauty in imperfection. It was only when I was able to let go of Sonni’s requirements that I began to have some real fun, in sewing and in my life. We are all imperfect, and so are these dresses. More art than anything else, repleat dresses are proud of their imperfections. Rather than hire professional seamstresses these garments are made by me, one at a time, at the dining room table (although last night I brought some hand-stitching in the car to finish on the way to dinner). They are just like me - good enough, pretty enough, perfect enough. I think you’ll like them too.
